National Geographic always carries out an annual review of the whole year that went by through its photographic lens. Let’s have a look at some of the most exquisite photographs of the year 2013 and the story hidden behind each of them. 

This photo belongs to the Travel 365 daily series and is shot in the region of Pomerania in Poland, right at the southern edge of the Baltic Sea. The area is known for its National Park named Slowinski and UNESCO includes it in its list of World Biosphere Reserves.

This particular picture won in the National Geographic Traveler's 25th Annual Photo Contest and alongside the other photos that stood out in the contest, it taught us a lot about our world and about ourselves. It is shot in Manaus, in the Amazon during the Brazilian Aquathlon which is a sport event combining running and swimming..

On June 23^rd 2013 we experienced the largest full moon of the year due to the moon’s close distance to the Earth. It was 8% larger and 17% brighter than usual and in this shot it is captured from the Marina Bay Sands Skypark in Singapore.

The past and the present all in one shot. While some Bedouins are having an April afternoon siesta in Abu Dhabi, a luxury jeep crossing the desert is visible in the background. Although Abu Dhabi owns 10% of the global oil, it still maintains the Bedouin tradition.

This spectacular picture is the result of a capture combining the sunset and a stone falling into the ocean at White Rock in Canada.

This ice boulder characterized by outmost brilliance became a Photo of the Day by National Geographic on October 27^th 2013. The "Diamond of Ice" was found in one of the beaches of Iceland and connotes to, both, beauty and tragedy as glaciers are undergoing extinction.
