“Birds with Skymirrors” choreography at the Onassis Cultural Centre this week

A choreography so alive that you will feel that birds are indeed flying in the Main internal floor space of the Onassis Cultural Centre!

This is precisely what the choreographer Lemi Ponifasio had in mind, who this year is staging a spectacular show at the cultural space of the Onassis Cultural Centre. So make a note of everything we need to know about this unique dance spectacle titled “Birds with Skymirrors”...

-          The concept of the spectacle was realized during a visit of the choreographer at the island of Taraoua. In his walks he noticed a particular species of birds that had plastic stripes of videotape hanging from their beaks which reflected the light of day like mirror images, thus, causing the artist's enthusiasm with a tremendous inspiration for creation.

-          Neither Ponifasio nor the members of his dance team have an academic education in dance. But the much requested in international festivals distinguished activist choreogreapher has a degree in philosophy and political sciences. He explains that in Samoa -where he comes from- singing, dancing and rituals are a part of everyday life for the inhabitants.

-          The dancing company consists of 3 dancers from Maori - New Zealand and 7 dancers from the island nations of Kiribati and Touvalou of Oceania, all of which are in a process of disappearance from the map due to the ever rising levels of the Oceans.

-          His last project titled Prometheus, is based on the music by Karl Orff who was inspired by the known tragedy by Aeschylus and premiered this past September at the Ruhr Triennale in Germany.

Hosted at the Main Stage of the OCC between the 7th  – 11th of November and at 20:30.
