Varoussi: An enchanting quarter of Trikala town we simply must see

By taking a stroll within the quarter of Varoussi you will see the old Christian housing settlement of the town of Trikala in Thessaly during the Ottoman Era dating back to, mainly, the 17th and 18th century. You will be conveyed to a different epoch, where time seems to have forgotten this traditional settlement and where the houses are built in an erratic way, with their second floor protruding and painted in bright colours, such as green, pink, indigo blue and light mauve. Only a few of these houses have been restored and refurbished due to the fact that the whole settlement is listed as a preserved one and strict rules apply for new buildings, as far as urban planning and architectural styling is concerned.

Varoussi will amaze you if you are a lover of fine architecture especially as it manifests upon houses and Byzantine churches dating between the 15th and the 18th century AD. The best views in Varoussi you will acquire by visiting the Frourio fortress. The absolute must-do especially at sunset time.
Within the town of Trikala, look for the “Manavika” quarter too which is situated between the old settlement of Varoussi and the central square of the town. The particular quarter constitutes the nightlife hot spot of Trikala since the area is absolutely packed with bars, restaurants and tavernas to suit all tastes. We really like Ladofanaro tavern (corner of Ipsilandou & Kanigos streets, tel. ++30 24310-74610).
