Areopolis is one of the most beautiful villages in Mani and it is a reason by itself for a unique excursion in Peloponnese. Built in the center of the Mani Peninsula, at an altitude of 250 m., Areopolis cuts Mount Taigetos in two, while offering great views to the beautiful Messinian Bay. One of the historically most important traditional villages in Greece,  located 72 km. away from Sparta, Areopolis was the place where the Greek War of Independence started on the 17^th of March 1821.

To get to Areopolis,  follow the road from Sparta to Gythio and proceed to Mani. You will need to drive for about 72 km from Sparta and 25 km from Gythio. Just 20 minutes away from Gerolimenas, Areopolis reserves the colours of authentic Mani but is also ideal for intense lifestyle all day long.

Taxiarches Church is at the historic square of March 17, 1821 and has an important sculpture temple as well as excellent decoration.

The St. John the Baptist church of Mavrimichalis family has excellent frescoes since 1746 and 1868.

In the double church of St Mary and St Charalambos at Niarhakou square you will admire frescoes since 1869.

On the outskirts of the city you will find St Polycarp church, Panagia Kontorianiki , All Saints monastery and Virgin Tsipiotissa with frescoes since the 18^th century.
