A fresh start for the Museum of Ali Pasha in the city of Ioannina

A fresh start for the Museum of Ali Pasha in the city of Ioannina

The islet opposite the city of Ioannina, acquires its long lost tourist glamour through the renovation of the Ali Pasha Museum.

The collector Mr. Fotis Rapakoussis supported this whole initiative through his personal devotion and support and, hence, the two museums of the islet are back and running since this past summer. The Museums are named “Epanastatikis Periodou” meaning "of the Revolutionary Era" and “Ali Pasha” which takes its name after the region’s master back then and it is actually hosted at what used to be the “House of Ali Pasha”.

After this last renovation, we find a further enriched collection of rare objects, ranging from guns used during the Turkish occupation and elaborate bullet belts, to various specimens of historical importance and manuscripts dating back to the time-span of 1780 to 1820.

The new building hosts a rich collection of lithographs streaming from the revolutionary era worthy of our admiration, but we can also enter the cells of the monastery of Aghios Panteleimonas where Ali Pasha found tragic death by Turkish soldiers.

Moreover, we can also see and admire the authentic costume worn by Kira Vassiliki, as well as, the 1.62 meter long smoking pipe which belonged to Ali Pasha. Without doubt, one of the most important things to see are the marks made at the walls of the cell by the bullets which killed Ali Pasha.

A Folklore Museum is going to be opening its doors to the public very soon. It is going to be located  right next to the Museum of Ali Pasha and it will exhibit traditional costumes and uniforms of this certain period.
