This year’s “Mid Winter” bird census will monitor the aquatic birds that have found a habitat in the island of Rhodes.

Admirers of rare bird species and bird-watchers will meet up on Sunday the 27^th of January for their annual gathering.

The “Mid Winter” census of aquatic birds at the wetlands of the island of Rhodes is about to begin and the number of people joining the gathering is greater than last year, when the census was conducted for the first time.

The particular monitoring is part of the universal bird census which is conducted under the hospices of the International Wetlands Association and which also monitors raptors and seabirds which visit wetlands for prey, as well as, the bird species which consider a wetland as their typical natural habitat.

This programme takes place once a year in more than 100 countries and participants count over 15.000 people, which are mainly volunteers that are willing to monitor and log the wetland bird species in places such as lakes, swamps and river deltas.

The collected data is then treated by the International Wetlands Association and the results constitute valuable tools that will guide the various related organizations through the appropriate handling of bird populations and, of course, aid with the assessment of the importance of wetlands at an international level.

This year’s gathering and census are set for the 27^th of January.
