Lake Drakolimni: Discover the myth of dragon’s lake in the region of Epirus

The mythical lake Drakolimni is located in the area of Papigo and at an altitude of more than 2.000 meters, in between the mountain peaks of Lapatos and Ploskos.

Its name emerges from a myth about a dragon -a huge creature which is believed to have found its natural habitat within this lake- and which is in constant conflict with another dragon...that of mountain Smolikas -the second highest mountain on Greek land after Mount Olympus-.

Up until recently, lake Drakolimni was believed to be very deep but soon after relative research in its environment it became apparent that it doesn’t go any deeper than 5 meters. The lake has a rich fauna which includes Alpine Triton, a very rare amphibian species between 8 –12 centimeters in length and black-brown shaded outer spine which is actually protected by the Greek and European legislations alike.

All year round the lake is visited by many due to the fact that it constitutes one of the country’s busiest mountaineering centers and it is only an hour's drive from Astraka mountain shelter. The lake is accessible only on foot and the route is equally enjoyable by visitors who do not have prior experience in trekking or mountain climbing.

What could we say about the view it presents us with...It could only be amazing since it offers an unobstructed panorama of the numerous mountain peaks that surround it.
