Tonight is the night: The biggest full moon of the last 70 years

The full moon of November 14th is not only the closest and brightest full moon of 2016, according to NASA, but it also it is the closest to the earth of the 21st century. We admire it from the most idyllic place of Athens.

On November 14 we will see the largest full moon of the 21st century and the last 70 years. The moon will be even larger than the last “super-moon” in 1948, while the next time we will see such big a moon in our planet will be on November of 2034.

What is a super moon

The term «supermoon» entered our vocabulary only in recent years. Originally the term was used by astrology and meant the new moon or the full moon that would occur while the moon was at 90% of the perigee (ie close to the Earth). Plus, we call supermoon every full moon closer to Earth than the average distance of the Earth to its satellite.

A supermoon occurs when the moon is at the perigee, ie closest to the Earth, so the moon's diameter seems larger. As the moon's orbit is elliptical, sometimes it approaches Earth at 30,000 miles closer (perigee) and other times it is drifting away (apogee). When the Sun and the Moon are aligned and the Moon is at perigee, then a supermoon occurs. A supermoon may appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a normal full moon when the moon is at its peak.

However, the fact that the full moon appears larger is basically an optical illusion. What actually happens is not that the moon seems larger, but when it is relatively closer to the horizon, it is compared with various other features found there, such as trees, antennas, and various buildings, so it seems bigger.

The team “Apodrasi sti fysi”could not do other way but take advantage of this unique occasion. That’s why we are invited on Monday November 14, to visit the rocks of the Acropolis. Meeting point: Syntagma (outside of Mc Donalds restaurant), at 21:00. Facebook Page
