If it's in my hotel room, it’s mine, right?
More than two out of three (70%) British travellers admit they have taken things from their hotel room at the end of their stay, with toiletries being the most popular items among those. Three in five (59%) UK hoteliers report that their guests usually put various items in their luggage just before they leave. The TripBarometer Truth in Travel survey, however, reveals several discrepancies between what travellers say they take, compared to what hoteliers report missing from hotel rooms after the departure of guests.
Guests often admit to have taken with them items that are customarily thought of as complimentary, i.e. toiletries and stationery. What is often peculiar though, is that some travellers believe that items such as towels, light bulbs and batteries within their rooms are also free to take.
Although fewer than one out of ten (7%) of travellers internationally and a mere one out of twenty (5%) British travellers admit to have taken towels from hotel rooms in which they stayed, an alarming percentage of hoteliers - one in four - report towels went missing after a guest’s stay.
A lot of guests seem to have a peculiar notion of what a “souvenir” really is. One in ten hoteliers report clothes hangers missing, while 7% also report batteries from the TV remote missing too after the ckeck-out.

Among the main key motivators for selecting an accommodation is of course the freebies involved. The traveller’s interest in complimentary amenities has increased as compared to last year, thus, reinforcing the idea that one of the best ways for hoteliers to attract guests is to offer as many free services as possible, as part of the daily room rate.
At least two in three (68%) British travellers expect their selected hotel to have free Wi-fi in the room.
As quoted by TripAdvisor representative, James Kay: “It seems as if us Brits are more prone to misunderstading what a freebie is but, in any case, we are not the only ones. Travellers from around the world are apparently susceptible in taking items such as towels and clothes hangers with them at their departure. US hotels report that those two are the most common among many others.”
