3 Reasons To Visit Astypalaia Island

Astypalaia, the butterfly-shaped island located exactly where the Dodecanese meets the Cyclades, with the bluer-than-blue seas, the crystalline waters and the beautiful beaches is for any visitor a unique discovery. Even though Astypalea  belongs to the Dodecanese island group, it has a Cycladic architecture. Let’s find out 3 of the main reasons one should consider Astypalaia as a top destination for their summer holidays.

1. The Querini Castle

The Venetian Castle of Querini is the most characteristic and photographed site of Astypalea. It proudly stands on the top of the whitewashed Chora, and invites you on a journey in the 15th century. The fenced-roofed houses, which were inhabited until 1956, welcome you to the base of the Castle and introduce you to the local architecture. On your walk here, you discover the blue-white church of Portaitissa , as well as the chapel of Agios Georgios. You also admire the magnificent view of the endless blue, while you will experience the most beautiful sunrise on the island.

2.The white houses of Chora

Chora is the capital of Astypalea. The houses are close to each other and even detached, creating a labyrinth of small pebbled alleys. The plain white color only degrades from the light blue doors and windows or from the vivid colors of the flowers. You will catch yourself daydreaming while you discover every corner of the village. Hundreds of picturesque spots won’t let you stop wondering around. Until you reach one of the cafes or taverns to refresh yourself with a beverage or to grab a bite.  Τhe seven windmills are the highlight of Chora. Their red top is what makes them stand out. It is the place where many tourists use it as a meet up point.

3. Endless blue- Astypalea’s beaches

Astypalea has many beautiful beaches and coastlines. Some of them are only accessible by boat. All of them have crystal waters and are much quieter than in other islands. To start with Vathi Beach an isolated and pebbled beach. The bay is virtually closed except a small opening bearing a strong resemblance to a lagoon. The waters are shallow. Once you visit the beach you should not avoid hopping on a boat that can take you to the Cave of the Dragon nearby. It is an impressive formation of stalactites and stalagmites sculpted by nature over hundreds of years. Another secluded beach is Psili Ammos Beach and it is better to approach it by boat. The rocky and arid landscape surrounding the beach matches with the general character of the island. If you are bold and adventurous then you have to go to Plakes. It is not a beach with its classical meaning but a tiny rocky cove with crystal clear waters. Visitors who like the adrenaline just take a dive from the rocks to the water.

Melograno Villas is an ideal destination for those who seek a tranquil and comfortable environment to spend their holidays. The three luxury villas (which accommodates from 4 to 6 guests) include all necessary amenities and are situated right in the heart of the Chora, on Astypalaia Island. The villas offer not only an amazing view of the Aegean Sea, but an elegant exterior Jacuzzi, beautiful contemporary decoration and deluxe facilities that will make your stay in Greece totally unforgettable.

Start dreaming here.
