Traditional products with a Myconian flair…

Upon arrival on the “island of the winds” our first thought is always to have fun and party all night long. There is, though, another angle of Μykonos waiting to be discovered by the thousands of visitors on an annual basis. Beyond the island’s luxury restaurants which you will certainly try during your stay, do not omit to taste the locally sourced traditional products. Flavors and aromas from the Cyclades that will definitely satisfy even the most demanding palates.

One of the most famous Mykonian products, you will ask for by its Greek name, “kopanisti”. It is made of “tirovolia” cheeses containing cow milk and the helpful aid of the sun, salt and heat needing at least 20-25 days to mature before consumption. Spicy and very tasty it accompanies every type of food throughout the day. This product has "Protected Denomination of Origin".

Another traditional product that you should taste is called “louza” and it is a savory cold cut made of pork fillet. The large sausage is salted and let within the salt for about 24 hours. It is then rinsed and filled with plenty of oregano, spices, salt and pepper and hanged upside down outdoors for at least 20-25 days until completely dry. Μykonos is also famous for its sausages which are strictly made of pork meat and lard and contain spices and oregano. Once prepared and "braided" in loops, they are dipped in brine and hanged outdoors to dry with the aid of the wind and the sunlight.

In your walks within the stone-paved alleys of the Chora of Mykonos main town, search for patisserie Chocolart and taste the ‘tirovolia’ flavored ice cream. It may be of a peculiar taste but it will certainly impress you.
