Naxos cheese making: This is where taste meets with tradition

The Greek cheese industry proudly presents a wide variety of very interesting tastes and Naxos island constitutes a paradise for lovers of cheese. The cheese farms operating in the mountainous areas, still produce cheeses in the traditional way and their processes remain untouched by the passing of time. We have selected only five of the most famous cheeses that the island of Naxos produces locally and we present them to you below. Now all you have to do is visit the island and do some cheese shopping to take back home with you and share with friends and family.

5 year old Graviera cheese

One of the most famous cheeses, made of cow milk and left to mature until it acquires a full taste and butter appearance resembling to that of parmesan cheese and with a rockford aftertaste. Try it graded on fresh pasta or combine it with dried figs, honey, marmalades and sweet wines for a sweet delight.

A cheese with an oily, strong taste made of goat’s fresh milk. You can eat it on its own or place it in a cheese platter with other cheeses and combine it with wine drinking. It has won the gold award last October at the Milk & Cheese exhibition in Athens.

Naxos Thilikotiri cheese

A white cheese with a velvety form and a light taste of butter and a well balanced savoury taste. Although it is low in fats (19-21%) it has a delicious taste that you can even enjoy in your breakfast or in combination with wine drinking. Also delicious with marmalades due to its “polite” taste.

Aghios Isidoros cheese

Yellow cheese made of goat’s milk at the homonymous village in Naxos island. 48% in fats with a very balanced taste and a soft form. Combine it with other cheeses in a cheese platter.

Komos cheese in 3 versions

Cheese leftovers from various types mixed with freshly scented mountain herbs that, nowadays, combines beautifully with a drink of “tsipouro” or ouzo. Try it graded on top of your pasta dishes with a touch of garlic…or deep fry it in a pan. It is very low in fats and absolutely delicious.
