By taking a stroll within the most famous quarter of Trikala, named Varoussi, you will see the old Christian settlement during the Ottoman Era dating back to, mainly, the 17th and 18th century. You will be conveyed to a different epoch, where time seems to have forgotten this traditional settlement and where lovers of architecture will admire the glamorous housing most of which has been refurbished, painted in bright colours, such as green, pink, indigo blue and light mauve.

Between the old settlement of Varoussi and the central square of the town, you will discover the quarter of “Manavika” constituting the nightlife hot spot of Trikala since the area is absolutely packed with bars, restaurants and tavernas to suit all tastes.  

As you exit the quarter of Varoussi, you will face the gate of the Frourio fortress, as well as the large Clock which constitutes the town’s trademark. Climbing up the numerous stairs will bring you at a height of thirty three meters. Totally worthy of your effort, if you want to see the town from above, with its countless red roofs and in order to gain an extensive view of the beauty of the glorious Thessalic plains that will stun you especially at sunset time!




The town of Trikala could be described as a heavenly place for cyclists, since it spreads over a totally flat area in continuance to the Thessaly plains. A lot of the locals use a bicycle to get around the town. As a visitor you can cycle along the river banks of Lithaios river.

• The county of Trikala is famous for a range of locally sourced products, such as the cheese varieties, meat and the alcoholic drink of “tsipouro”. Do not omit to get a good supply of the reputable local sausages which are staffed with leek, as well as, any of the local cheeses and wine.

• The town of Trikala is a very popular destination especially for the Christmas season when visiting the famous “Mill of Elves” is an absolutely delightful experience. The traditional building hosting it, used to be a water mill entirely built of stone and it is called Matsopoulos Mill. Every Christmas, the building is transformed into the most festive toy and confectionery factory.
