We thank Giorgos Kokouvas for his article at in2life.gr (summary in English below)

The most beautiful island in the world. The land of the lost Atlantis. The most magical summer destination in Europe. Santorini cherishes a great fame and its charms are truly countless. Here is a concise Top 10 of unforgettable experiences while you are there...

* The sunset in Oia

You don’t have to be romantic. The sunset’s mysterious forces will hypnotize you but keep some energy in order to capture its magic with your camera. Head to the Castle of Ayios Georgios for the best angle. Other less crowded spots for a great sunset: Prophet Elias, the hill of ancient Thira, Faros village, the castle of Pyrgos village and the beach of Vlihada.

* The fantastic beaches

The rumors that Santorini is not appreciated for its beaches should not be taken into account! They are certainly exotic… Vlihada offers a lunar landscape for your swim. Red Beach offers a brick red sand and turquoise waters – what an antithesis! Perissa and Kamari boasts volcanic black sands and pebbles which are the best for a fast suntan. Do not omit a dive at Ammoudi Bay at the foot of Oia.

* Fira nightlife

The day belongs to the beaches and the night belongs to the capital Fira. Pick and choose your favorite venue along the breathtaking Caldera. There is plenty for every taste.

* Touring the island

Visiting the villages of the Caldera is a must! Fira, Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani first of all. Other settlements to see are, the quaint Karterados, the medieval Pyrgos in the heart of the island, the Castle of Emporio, the chapels of Vothonas, the wineries in Finikias, the open views from Exo Gonia and Megalohori. Last bu not least, visit the caves of Mesa Pigadia.

* The volcano

The island of Santorini was once roundly shaped. After the massive volcanic eruptions during the past, we come to see its current shape. Right opposite, we visit the volcanic islets of Palea and Nea Kameni for a fascinating experience near the crater and the neighboring island of Thirasia. Also worthy to see and try are the thermal springs.

* The open-air cinema in Kamari

It was voted by the Guardian as one of the ten most beautiful open-air cinemas in the world. A good reason enough to see it from close up!

* The archaeological treasures

The archaeological heart of the island beats in the area of Akrotiri where a whole pre-historic city has been unburied by layers of volcanic ash. At an altitude of 396 meters, stands proud ancient Thira in Mesa Vouno dating back to the Hellenistic Era. Also worthy to viist are: the Museum of Prehistoric Thira and the Archaeological Museum.

* The most special bookshop in the world

It is called Atlantis Books, it is in Oia village and belongs to Oliver and Craig from Britain. For 10 years now they have been selling new or previously loved books with great care. Literary festivals and parties are also very charming!

* The wines

The particular soil and climate of the island yield special varieties of exuberant wines. White assyrtiko, athiri and aidani. Do not omit to taste the famous vinsanto wine. There are plenty of superb wineries for tours and wine tastings.

* The gastronomy

Numerous restaurants and tavernas offer seafood classics and exquisite gourmet dishes. Taste the fava beans and the local cherry tomatoes plus all the rare vegetables grown with the morning’s humidity! There are options for all budgets and all tastes. Absolutely.
