Easter in Mani: A unique experience

Easter in Mani: A unique experience

The Laconian Mani gets dressed in the colors of wildflowers, the aromas of spring and shares traditional local customs with its visitors. On Good Thursday, from the town of Areopolis and the Diros Tower to Gerolimenas and Porto Cayo, the housewives cook traditional Easter desserts. On Good Friday, the atmosphere is particularly devout in Areopolis, Flomochori and Gerolimenas, while in the evening of the Resurrection, the entire sky of Mani gets illuminated with colorful fireworks.

Visit Leonidio, for a special Easter experience... After Resurrection, locals and visitors set free thousands of colored balloons with the aim to “reach as close to God as possible”. The air-balloons seem like stars flying up high and watching them slowly disappearing one by one is a unique spectacle. At the same time, fireworks and fire-crackers compliment the whole fascinating experience.

The serene Gerolimenas is one of the most beautiful villages in the area. Famous for its picturesque setting, it mainly consists of one small port. Gerolimenas is situated in the heart of Mesa Mani (Inner Mani) and cherishes the charming cape of Cavo Grosso.

The road that unites the town of Areopolis and the settlement of Gerolimenas is a magnificent specimen of the grandeur of Greek nature. We are referring to the “backbone” of the region of Mani which meanders and twists below the imposing slopes of Mount Saggias, while the smaller roads which stream from it will lead us to the beautiful villages of Mani through vast expanses of olive groves.

On the way to Areopolis, on the main road, you reach Diros Tower and the famous caves that are definitely worth a visit. Diros is one of the most beautiful and impressive caves of the world that began its formation hundreds of years ago. You will discover it enjoying a magical boat route- an awesome experience- and you will be dazzled by the spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, while listening to the history of the caves by the boatman who will also be your guide.

Then, travel to Areopolis, the capital of Mani which is one of the most historical villages of the region and is by itself a unique reason to visit Peloponnese. Built in the center of the Mani Peninsula, at an altitude of 250 m., Areopolis cuts mountain Taygetos in two, offering great views to the beautiful Messinian Bay.

Just 5 km. away from Areopolis, visit Limeni, a beautiful seaside village and one of the most traditional villages of the area. Admire the seafront tower-houses, while enjoying delicious food in the traditional taverns of the area.

Housed in a fully restored nineteenth century building complex, just off the southernmost tip of Mani, in Gerolimenas, Kyrimai Hotel combines traditional architecture with modern comfort. Its rooms face Mani’s crystal-blue sea as well as its glorious landscape, while its one-of-a-kind menu embraces local elements that have stood the test of time, but with a modern twist.

As it has been built so close to the sea, Kyrimai offers its visitors a unique experience, in that they can be almost literally lulled by the waves that hit the shore right next to the hotel grounds. The view of the crystal blue sea is a constant, while swimming in the Maniot sea is a joy you will not be likely to forget anytime soon. Its rooms combine traditional materials such as wood and stone, with modern, elegant furnishing, but also wonderful vistas of the surroundings.
