One of the most impressive gorges of Greece invites travelers to become one with the awe-inspiring nature of Arcadia and feel the history of the destination, listening the whispers of the nymphs that once bathed newborn Jupiter in the crystal clear waters of Lousios river.

The gorge of Lousios is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the Peloponnese, not only thanks to its lush nature and pristine beauty, but also because of its historical and religious significance.

The impressive gorge, with 15 km length 15 and 2 km width, is crossed by Lousios river, who is said to borrow its name because the nymphs Neda, Agno and Theisoa  bathed the newborn Zeus in its frozen River springs (springs of the Immortals), after Saturn's command.

The river passes between an unimaginable landscape that inspires awe and admiration and splits the homonymous valley in two, ending up to Alpheus, near the village of Karytaina. The luxuriant vegetation, full of firs, cypresses, evergreen and broadleaved species, the colors of nature and the intoxicating scents of the rich flora, combined with wild, steep cliffs of the canyon, creating a unique breathtaking scenery.

Carved in the cliffs of the gorge, the two most historic monasteries of the region, the Philosopher's Monastery and the Monastery of Prodromos are worth of our visit. Floating on the west side of the Lousios gorge, the Philosopher's Monastery dating from the 17th century and is the oldest monastery of Arkadia and one of the oldest Byzantine monuments of Greece. Nearly opposite, on the left bank of Lousios, the historic monastery of Timios Prodromos was built during the 16th century and offers a breathtaking view from its balcony.

Today the gorge of Lucius is an archaeological site under the protection of the ministry of culture, while it is also an area of ecological protection. We access it via hiking among the paths leading to Ancient Gortyna and the village of Elliniko, a truly unique experience for the visitor.
