Kapsia village: an escape at the foot of mountain Menalo

Kapsia village is situated at the foot of the northeastern side of mountain Menalo and constitutes one of the most picturesque settlements of the Peloponnese.

A village with rich history stemming from the ancient times right through to the Greek revolution of 1821, where it is mentioned for its dynamic participation.

A village that gave birth to a headman of the revolution named Nikos Kalteziotis, whose original mansion still exists and has actually been reclaimed as a hotel bearing his name: Archontiko Kaltezioti (Kaltezioti Mansion). All in all, a very interesting area worthy of your visit for its ‘treasures’ of unique beauty and significance.

Here is a checklist of places to see while you are there:

-          The public Elementary School which dates back to the 1930s and you will come across it exiting Kapsia village and heading to Levidi village.

-          Kladouri winery

-          The picturesque church of prophet Elias

-          The Ancient Theater of Mandinea and the church of Saint Fotini at a mere 3.5 km from the village of Kapsia

-          The unique geological phenomenon of the Κapsia water sinkholes which drain the waters from the area’s plateau towards the valley of Argoliko and the Ionian Sea.

-          The 3 marble bust sculptures of Ioannis Orfanos (teacher of the village), Nikolaos Orfanos (benefactor of the village) and Elpida Orfanou (owner of the church of prophet Elias).

-          The elaborate golden coated hagiography of Panagia Eleftherotria (depiction of Virgin Mary) at the church of St. Nikolas.

-          The Kapsia caves located at 1 km from the village, where traces of human life from the Neolithic Age have been recorded and where you can also spot some more water sinkholes by its entrance.
