Trikala: Hi tech in the river of oblivion

Hundreds of bikes, paved streets, the pervasive smell of coffee and a river flowing between us ... Nymphs wander in the shadows of Lethaeos, the modern history awakes in meticulously cultural sites and technology then sets the bar high, converting Trikala into a smart city.

This is Trikala at first glance and the truth is that you do not need a second one in order for this charming city to win your heart. With harsh cold during winter, sudden showers and a sweet moisture during summer, Trikala is a popular destination all year round.

Although relatively isolated from the rest of Greece, since 2004 Trikala "joins" its citizens with the whole world, as it is a leading technology destination through the Internet, offering free wireless to all. The innovative hi - tech local actions are complemented with on line medical, educational and transportation services, which make Trikala the the first "digital city" of the country.

Letheos river cuts the city idyllically in two, with 13 bridges connecting the banks with the once stately neighborhood Varousi at the foot of the fortress.

Trikala’s source of life is Litheos river, on the banks of which according to the historian Strabo Asclepius was born. The statue of the first physician of antiquity adorns the homonymous bridge and attracts the photographic flashes.

The best way to introduce yourself to the history of Trikala is to head to the highly updated museum of the city, the Cultural Center of Kliafa, an industrial building of 1926 that operated as refrigerator, ice factory and bottling plant of the popular beverage. The museum was built at the expense of the company and operates since 2003.
