Lindos: The big star of Rhodes island

Lindos: The big star of Rhodes island

With nobility that has not faded, beauty that has not expired, vitality and a well deserved reputation, Lindos is still the big star of Rhodes and a favorite of tourists and celebrities. And of the god Helios course.

Lindos is spread at your feet, seductive and shiny beneath the relentless sun, reminding more of a Cycladic town rather than a village of the anarchically structured Rhodes island.

Photo by Ηρακλής Μήλας www.thetravelbook.grIt is no coincidence that it was loved more than any other part of Greece in the 60s and 70s, when many foreign people, famous or  not, decided to live there for a while or forever, enjoying the anonymity of the place and the freedom of the era.

Cobblestone streets, proud captainhouses, white boxy houses with flower gardens, sandy beaches, some of the best restaurants, hotels and bars in the Aegean, breathe beneath the ancient citadel and tell stories about captains and knights, simple islanders, big personalities, frantic parties and nights full of music and love. The sparkle has not gone out.

The main square quietens only at noon when the temperature reaches the 50 degrees. The rest of the day. all nationalities are here, coming by foot, by coach, cruise ships and rented cars.

And then you climb further up following the path, the same that was used by ancient, Byzantine and knights to the castle.

You greet the ladies that you pass by, you admire the view and then you reach the medieval castle that thoroughly hides the Acropolis of the great ancient city, that radiates on the imposing rock blackmailing your admiration.

The knight walls, the ancient temple, the Doric portico, the theater and funerary monuments, the medieval buildings, the Byzantine churches and fragments of Palaiochristianic basilicas: here all the eras that have marked the history of Lindos meet with each other. You pass the medieval gate and you walk beside the walls and towers built by the Knights of the Order of St. John, creating a strong fortress.

At the top stands the temple of Athena Lindia of the 4th century BC, patiently enduring millions of glances that admire it throughout the year. It gazes the small and the large beach of Lindos, as well as Saint Paul, the secluded cove where according to legend, Apostle Paul landed in 57 AD.
