Building towers was basically a method of defense for the inhabitants, thus, most towers we will see during our visit are, indeed, war towers made of sharp stones, very tall and high enough to be higher than any other building within the settlement, narrow and conical in shape proving that they were designed specifically for warfare and not for habitation. The war towers were surrounded by tower dwellings also made of stone but lower in height. Sometimes towers reached as high as 20 meters. The people of Mani also constructed tower houses which they used for residential purposes.
