Most people match Trikala with the imposing Meteora, scenic Kalambaka, Lake Plastira or the beautiful mountain villages of Elati and Pertouli. Meteorisimo, a two day festival aiming to promote the local products and the gastronomy of Trikala, helped us meet the gastronomic wealth of the area through all local products, traditional sweets and dishes you can enjoy during your stay.

Within two days, visitors of Meteorisimo had the opportunity to taste local delicacies and watch live the traditional way of preparing them by chefs Nick Fotiadis and Aggelos Makris, housewives, bakers and confectioners of the region.

We admired women rolling the traditional ‘fyllo’ sheet in a minute and famous chefs making traditional pies and grilling local sausages and mushrooms. We tasted the local sweet ‘Spatula’ and traditional halva of Trikala. We also visited the small exhibition of local products such as milk, sausages, pasta, pickles, refreshments, spoon sweets, honey and cookies.

If you visit the area, do not miss:

  • The excellent quality meats, ‘kontosouvli’  from lamb or sheep and hunting such as deer and wild boar.
  • Traditional cooked meals such as boiled goat with trahana and ‘prasotigania’, a local dish with fried pork and leek.
  • Traditional pies like trachanopita, ‘batzina’ (pumpkin pie), wild green from the mountains pie, local cheese pie etc.
  • Galotyri, a delicious spread white cheese from local goat’s milk with sour taste, served mainly as an appetizer or  accompanying grilled meat. In the villages it is even more delicious since it is made from family productions.
